The Crimson Cliffs of Corsica
Les Calanques de Piana are a collection of Mediterranean cliffs and columns in northwestern Corsica. Partway along a road trip from Ajaccio to Calvi, their scorched shades — scarlet, pink and orange, or just flaming red in sunlight — are the headline in a switchbacking, six-mile segment of the D81 after Porto. It’s easy to park up and hike closer if desired. Beforehand, laze on Arone’s sandy beach and stop for a Scandola Nature Reserve cruise to spot sea eagles and visit villages inaccessible by road. Should you want to stay longer, rent a villa in Calvi or drive around the isolated Cap Corse peninsula’s windmills and hamlets.
